New royalty crowned
By Regina Eckes

The tradition lives on as Z-Club representatives Bronson Mulleitner and Page Harder were crowned homecoming king and queen at last week's coronation ceremony.
Ritsche Auditorium was packed with standing room only as the royalty candidates were seated and Page Harder, selected at the Student Showcase, sang the National Anthem to start the ceremony. After the SCSU dance team fired up the audience, SCSU President Roy Saigo was invited to say a few words welcoming the candidates, students, family and friends. Saigo spoke highly of all the candidates and SCSU's homecoming as a whole.
"I have been to about four or five universities and this institution is so different in the sense that we are very inclusive," Saigo said. "We have a large number of candidates, we all have fun and we have a feeling of camaraderie. It's just terrific."
SCSU's cheer team performed their routine, followed by a few words from football and hockey representatives. Husky hockey member Ryan LaMere congratulated the candidates and reminded students that homecoming is partly about representing the community we live in.
"We've all seen what happened at Mankato and back at the University of Minnesota last year so let's represent our community and school this weekend by being safe and looking out for one another," LaMere said.
Selected performers from the Student Showcase were asked to do an encore in between candidate announcement. After Anthony Bayerl sang an original piece, the sound system faltered, forcing the masters of ceremonies Megan Osborne and Jesse Birnstihl to shout the names of the last candidates. Most of the names were lost among the applause and cheers coming from loyal supporters. The auditorium was still without sound when Mike Mages sang the Johnny Cash hit "Ring of Fire."
Power was eventually restored and Mages was asked to sing another song with the working microphone.
Finally the moment had come. Former royalty members Eamonn Thorpe, Estella Thorpe, David Christof and Jill Wolf had to step down from their ranks and pass on the crown to a new king and queen, prince and princess.
The 2003 homecoming prince and princess are T.K. Krueger Jr., representing the Dogg Pound Club and Rachel Hughes of Delta Zeta International Sorority. Hughes, vice president of student government, was excited to be representing her sorority.
"I'm proud to represent St. Cloud State so I'm excited more than anything," Hughes said. "I'm also proud to represent Delta Zeta. That's how I got my start here, getting involved and getting to know people."
Newly crowned homecoming queen Page Harder was nervous as well, but not about winning. She sang the National Anthem to start the program and said if she could nail the Anthem, then everything else would be fine.
"It's not that I'm not really excited to be the queen, but I wasn't worried about that," Harder said. "It's the National Anthem. You can mess up singing any other song in the world and no one would really care, but you cannot mess up singing the National Anthem."
After Harder's name was called, she apparently started clapping, not realizing she was the new queen. She was also excited to be representing an organization, Z-Club, that has shown immeasurable support during her campaign.
"We had a lot of support," Harder said. "Z-Club is awesome and they supported us in every possible way."
Bronson Mulleitner, Harder's running mate, was crowned homecoming king with the largest applause of the night resounding in his ears. Mulleitner was shocked because he is a second-year student, while most candidates are older and have been involved in their organizations longer.
Homecoming week may be over for the majority of students, but the 2003 royalty has the never-ending task of showing positive representation of their organizations and SCSU.
