Kids of all ages enjoyed the Boo Bash Friday night at the Halenbeck Fieldhouse. The event was sponsored by Campus Recreation. The night included Halloween-themed games and a trip to the National Hockey Center for a parade on the ice before the men´s game.
Games, swimming and fun, what more could you ask for on a Friday night?
Super Fridays is put on by Campus Recreation for school-aged children from four to 11-years-old. From 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., once a month, parents can drop their children off and leave them in a safe environment.
Super Fridays "Boo Bash" was Friday at Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse. The night started off with all the children in their costumes parading through the National Hockey Center.
Costumes ranged from firefighters to scary ghouls, from clowns to tigers, from skeletons to fairies and princesses. After the parade, the children played games such as "pin the nose on the pumpkin." There was also a pumpkin piata.
They made Halloween crafts, including egg carton spiders and decorated pumpkins and spider webs made out of paper and glitter glue.
Campus Recreation also put on a haunted house for the kids.
"I really liked it, it was pretty fun. You got to touch eyeballs, guts and brains," said Landon, age 10.
To start off, the kids were blind-folded and they sat on a wagon-type cart. Then, two at a time, they were led through the haunted house. Half way through, they got up and were led the rest of the way through the haunted house. There were strobe lights, scary music and people in the haunted house trying to scare the kids.
"I've done this quite a while," said Erica, age nine. Erica really liked the candy and the piata.
Lauren, age 10 said that she had been going to Super Fridays ever since she has been old enough. She likes the "swimming and crafts and just everything basically."
Lauren goes to Super Fridays with her brother Patrick, and sometimes her friends come with her. She said that she was excited for the spooky house, and that tonight her favorite thing was the crafts.
Volunteers from Campus Recreation staff these activities. Junior Jenika Romsdahl was in charge of Super Fridays Boo Bash.
"(Super Fridays) been going on ever since I've been here, it's been going on for years," Romsdahl said.
Campus Recreation limits the number of children who participate to 40, give or take a few, Romsdahl said. Each month Super Fridays have a specific theme, and they try to utilize different groups on campus. In November, the theme will be "Celebrate Healthy Eating and Fitness." The children are going to make cookbooks, learn some aerobics, and make healthy snacks. In December the theme will be "Drop and Shop." The children are to bring a list of names that they want to make presents for and they will have different crafts to make as presents.
Shelly Wagener, adjunct faculty member, said that a friend got her involved with Super Fridays. Friday night she was assisting the group that her two daughters were in; her son was also there. "I think they're (the kids) most excited about the candy," Wagener said.
"My roommate works at Eastman," Maria Iles, sophomore, said, and that is how she got involved with Super Fridays. "I will definitely come back, it's lots of fun." Iles worked at the arts and crafts booth for part of the night, and had popcorn duties during snack time.
