Finding new things to do makes life fun
Published:
Monday, October 27, 2003
Recently I was talking to a friend of mine who attends a different college. She asked, "What is there to do in St. Cloud, anyway?" And I opened my mouth before realizing that I didn't have an answer. Except maybe that St. Cloud, in my opinion, could be the restaurant capital of the world (besides Maple Grove, which is well on its way to becoming the restaurant capital of the universe).
Two other standard answers come to mind: movies and bars - neither of which are entirely innovative or exciting. In fact, is anything we students do innovative or exciting these days? What answer do you usually get when you ask what somebody's doing on Friday night? "Well, I'm going out." That's fine, but is going out every weekend the best way to create the kinds of experiences we want to look back on once college is over? I'm not sure a lot of us will think back to our college days and reminisce about "that time we sat around drinking Jello shots" or "that awesome Oriental chicken salad I had at Applebee's back in 2002." No, what we remember are the unique experiences we had and the fun we created with our friends. When we make an effort, the memories we come away with are unforgettable.
I remember one dreary Saturday last year. My friends and I impulsively decided to drive to a huge old abandoned house outside of town. We spent the afternoon exploring the house, climbing through rocks, accidentally losing my friend's cell phone and finding it again, and traipsing through the woods. We had a blast, and it didn't cost any money. Plus it was fun to brag about.
Point being, if we look a bit deeper than the standard entertainment fare in St. Cloud, you bet there are a lot of memories to be made. All it takes is a little creativity and randomness. A friend of mine once said to me, "I try to do one thing that is memorable every day, because that makes life worth it." I heartily agree.
