'Real World' visits campus

A sold-out crowd watched and bantered with the cast of 'Real World: Paris,' Thursday

"Real World: Paris" cast member C.T. explains the selection process of the reality television show Thursday evening at Ritsche Auditorium. The cast members discussed what it was like behind the scenes in their house and their impressions of being taped 24/7.

Amid a chorus of applause and adoring screams from their female fans, the cast of MTV's Real World took the stage in Ritsche Auditorium last Thursday to sit and talk to the SCSU student body about the recently completed season of MTV's hit reality series.

Ace, Adam, C.T., Christina, Leah, Mallory and Simon arrived in St. Cloud as part of a national tour in support of the "Real World: Paris" completion. For most of the cast it was their first time in Minnesota, but the bitter cold of last Thursday night proved to be no more than a slight inconvenience.

"I'm totally psyched to be here," Leah said. "My nipples are still attached just barely, but we're all looking forward to hitting up the Red Carpet later to check out the St. Cloud party scene that we've heard so much about, and hang out with some of the people."

Speaking in front of a completely sold-out crowd, in addition to several hundred people watching on simulcast in the Atwood Ballroom, the cast addressed questions on a broad range of topics from how they were selected to the cast to how they dealt with being under constant video surveillance. One of the more time consuming topics - and the one that was stressed most by the cast - was the portrayal of themselves by MTV. Some cast members had issues with how, through editing, their actions and conversations were skewed to fit a storyline.

"We're not characters the way MTV wants us to be, but through editing, that's how we were cast," Leah said. "If you look at us, you can almost see their thought process in casting us. You have the girl-crazy boy (Adam), the party girl (Christina), the pure virgin (Mallory), the gay (Simon) and, of course, the bitchy, annoying one (pointing to herself)."

Christina added to her fellow cast member's thoughts on the cast's portrayal.

"There obviously were a lot of things people didn't see," Christina said. "There were some really funny things that were left out because apparently comedy doesn't sell on MTV. Also, they really wanted to create storylines, and condensed things that were chronologically spread out into one episode to create the drama and chaos that everyone sees at home."

In addition, there were some tougher questions posed to some members of the cast, such as Adam. Asked what he had to say about his recent arrest for public drunkeness and loitering, he thought for a moment before responding.

"I'll say this for the record," Adam said, sporting a newly sheered head of hair, "the cop who arrested me just wanted his name in the paper. He was all set to let me go before he found out who I was, and then all of a sudden I'm in the back of a cruiser having every test known to man done on me. I told the cop I was just visiting a friend (Ace) and that I wasn't doing anything wrong. The girls had just pulled up and this party had just gotten going, and it basically just sucked."

Student reaction to the cast's visit was decidedly positive, and many had a blast getting to see his or her favorite cast members up close and personal.

"I love the Real World, and was definitely not disappointed. Ace is by far my favorite, but I have different feelings about some of the people after tonight," first-year student Megan Ferraro said. "For example, I like C.T. a lot more now after seeing him in person. Leah too made a good impression on me, and I really think she's learned from her mistakes, and like she said, she's a better person now because of it."

Ferraro's sentiments were echoed by most of the fans in attendance, but not everyone had such positive reviews. Sitting with friends at a table in The Press, Tony Ston readily shared his opinions of the cast and their campus visit.

"C.T. tried to act more like Dawson's Creek than anything else the entire time he was up there," Ston, a senior and finance major said. "As for Adam, he's such a wimp. I mean I thought he was going to rap, he didn't even do that. It was kind of fun though, and free which is good, and it seemed like everyone had fun."
