Seven senators elected

Amid the hot topics voted on during last week's campus election ballot, the 2004 student senate began its development with seven senators elected.

"It is an opportunity for me to see what goes on in the school," Senator-elect Stacey Springer said. "I'll get to see things from another angle."

Springer, a double-major studying psychology and political science at the College of Social Science, was elected to the senate with 453 votes. She is a junior from Lincoln, Neb., who has attended SCSU since she began her college experience.

Springer said she feels that it is important for every student to know what is going on with SCSU, especially on issues such as the referendum.

"As a general student, I don't know really what's going on," Springer said. "That's kind of why I wanted to get more involved."

Jessica Hamar will join Springer from the College of Social Science with 481 votes.

According to the SCSU Student Constitution, the student senate is made up of 10 senators: two representatives from each college representing the five major academic colleges.

Stacy Seidl, a transfer student from Moorhead State University (MSU), is about to finish her first semester at SCSU. Upon returning from semester break, she will enter her junior year of higher learning and begin her first term as a student senator from the College of Education.

"It will be a chance to meet new people," Seidl said. "A chance to get more involved and take part in making changes for the university."

Seidl is a special education major from New Ulm, Minn.

Jill Hofacker will also be serving on the senate from the College of Education after gaining 495 votes.

Peng Lei, a transfer student from Normandale Community College, was elected to the senate with 670 votes. He will be representing the College of Science and Engineering and is an electrical engineering major who has been attending SCSU for two years.

Enango Fale was recognized as a write-in candidate for the College of Science and Engineering. If Fale is interested in the student senate position, the student government body will determine his acceptance.

Laura Meyer accumulated 700 votes and will represent the College of Fine Arts.

A two-way tie between write-in candidates Holly Santiago and Jesse Lebnow will have to be decided on to determine the other chairholder from the College of Fine Arts.

There was a four-way tie between write-in candidates James Johnson, Brent Ege, Forrest Hopper and James L. Barq for one of the College of Business seats. Chipo C. Marangwada secured his seat on the senate with 728 votes.

Marangwada is a junior finishing his first semester at SCSU after transferring from Seattle Central Community College. He is originally from Gweru, Zimbabwe and is anticipating the opportunity to play an active role in making SCSU a better school.

"I ran because, as well as addressing other student issues when appropriate, I particularly want to be involved - addressing issues from the College of Business," Marangwada said. "I have a passion for business and I want to use this passion in a positive way for the College of Business and the students it educates."

All of the senate write-in candidates will be listed in the student government display case in the Atwood Memorial Center. Those candidates interested in serving as senators will be admitted after consideration by the student government.

Internal elections could also decide vacant seats on the senate. Those elections are held during the first student government meeting of each month.

All of the elected senators will begin their terms when spring semester begins.

The purpose of the student senate is to represent the diversity of the student government through the ability to vote on legislation that reflects its collective opinions and interests.
