The Dream is still alive and well

As the naysayers become prevalent in our society, I hear more and more about how the "American Dream" is dead. Not so. I'm living proof that the American dream is alive.

I have just built a new house in Big Lake, I own two cars and I have a refrigerator with an ice maker built into it. I have a beautiful wife, however, no children yet. We live well above the poverty line. My wife has a great full time job as a teacher, and I have decent part time job. We pay the bills, mow the lawn, shovel the snow and consider ourselves living the good life.

We both are doing what we want. My wife wanted to be a teacher. She's doing that, she also wants to be a novelist. I want to write for a newspaper, and I am preparing for that. I'm not very skilled, confident or good right now, but with time, practice and teaching from this fine institution I will get there. If we are living the good life now, it will be that much better when I get a "real" job and have some money to spend to better our lives even further.

Now was this just dropped into our laps? Absolutely not. We had to work hard to get to where we are at. I had to work long hours at my job to help put my wife through school. Now she is doing the same for me. It's not easy, but we see the big picture. That picture is beautiful. Anyone can achieve the American dream by working hard, seeing the goal and going for it. In America you can do that - no matter what race, sex or creed. That's the beauty of America. My wife grew up in a poor household, but she didn't let that hold her back from her dreams.

If you're sitting in class, and you overhear someone say that it sucks to live in America and the American dream is dead, tell them "You're wrong, brother! People are out there living it, just keep on keeping on and you'll get there."
