Sauk Rapids to raise parking fines
Sauk Rapids will enforce tougher penalties for parking violations starting April 1. The new laws were approved last week, but City Council members were willing to wait until after the winter parking season to begin implementing the new measures.

Parking violations are currently $10 and are doubled after two days. The new measures will continue to increase the cost of the ticket the longer it is unpaid and fines can go as high as $100. The city says it will not benefit much from the increases because most violators pay their tickets on time.

Despite the new measures, Sauk Rapids is still considered to be more lenient than surrounding area cities. St. Cloud base fines are $20 as well as St. Joseph and Sartell. Waite Park fines start out at $10 but can reach $300.

Number of applications increases
Officials from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, St. Cloud State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead have reported an increase in the amount of applications being received.

Because online applications are convenient, it is believed students are applying to several schools instead of just one. Also, high school classes are larger and the slow economy may be forcing students to go to school instead of heading into the job market.

Though application numbers are up, many colleges do not plan on enrolling more students than they have in the past.
