Another year to get these things done

The year has begun and a fresh season of our lives is unfolding, whether we're ready or not. I thought about sharing my New Year resolutions, but then I realized this column would be extremely short, because I didn't make any. Resolutions, though, are an apt reminder of the deeper motivations behind how we choose to live. There is good in resolutions, but why do they often fail so quickly? We try to improve all the details of our lives in one big rush. My question to you (and to myself): Are the details really so important? Maybe it's more worthwhile to think about what our lives really mean to us and to the world. I know, especially as college students, that this is the time to gather up everything that has shaped us into who we are, and use those memories, those quirks and qualities, to determine who we are becoming. Instead of fretting about smaller flaws in our lives, perhaps this is the moment to find out our own purpose in this crazy little corner of the galaxy.

Yes, I know it sounds cheesy, and hard to do. But bear with me. Is there one thing that you want to do more than anything else before you die? Is there something you want to accomplish? How do you want people to perceive you? What things in your life excite you, are meaningful to you? Why? Stop reading for a second and think about it. Who are you, really? That's a huge question. It would be cool if you wrote the answers down - I find that helps a lot. Is this scary? It is, kind of. But I also know that somebody has allowed me to exist, and I don't ever want to waste that. Once we know the reason we are here, everything else is secondary. All the details will come along. And that way we won't have to spend our time worrying about little resolutions. It's our purpose that really matters in the end. Am I ready? Are you?
