Opportunity sends photos from Mars
Opportunity sends photos from Mars Members of mission control received new photographs from Opportunity, the latest Mars rover, Sunday afternoon. Control members applauded when they saw the pictures.
Scientists say they cannot analyze the images yet since this is the first time they have glimpsed the Meridiani Planum, the area of Mars Opportunity is exploring.
Opportunity is an exact copy of Spirit, the first rover to land on Mars, but scientists report Spirit is going through technical difficulties. Opportunity and Spirit are stationed on opposite sides of the planet, about 6,000 miles apart.
Scientists look forward to comparing and contrasting the images they received from the two rovers. Opportunity's photos reveal a dark grey surface with craters and white obstacles. The pictures Spirit sent before Opportunity showed a reddish surface with small rocks.
Poultry industry suffers in Thailand Thailand was recently informed that its poultry industry has been infected with bird flu. The prime minister attempted to keep the outbreak a secret to prevent the country from panicking.
Thailand is one of the top five exporters of chickens in the world, making its poultry industry an important part of its economy. Six humans and millions of chickens have died from the disease since the outbreak.
Scientists predict at least six months until a vaccine can be found. Scientists also say if bird flu mutates and is able to be transmitted among people, it could cause a worse scare than SARS.
China, Japan and parts of Europe have already placed bans on the import of Thai chicken.
