Quartet performs at Ritsche

With three albums under its belt and a worldwide list of performances, the Brazilian Guitar Quartet is set to bring its eclectic, acoustic blend to campus with a performance at Ritsche Auditorium.

The quartet has boasted successful North American tours from 2000 to 2003 and will be featured at the inaugural World Guitar Congress in Baltimore in June.

At the Congress they will be joined by the Baltimore Symphony to give a world premiere of a specially commissioned concerto by Ronaldo Miranda, Brazil's 2001 "Composer of the Year."

Before they share their custom concert with the world's renowned guitarists, they will make a stop in St. Cloud for a performance sponsored by the University Program Board tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

The "Dream Team," as they are called in Brazil, is composed of founding members Everton Gloeden and Tadeu do Amaral, along with Paulo Porto Alegre and Nicolas de Souza Barros.

Gloeden, a native of Sao Paulo, gave the first performance in Brazil of Bach's complete lute works. He aslo performed in England, Germany and an opening recital at the International Festival of Caracas, Venezuela.

With a pioneering role in spreading guitar music to the State of Santa Catarina, where it is almost unknown, Amaral has been a highly praised musician in Brazil and throughout the world.

Alegre, who joined Gloeden and Amaral with Barros in 2003, was the first Brazilian to win the Palastrina and Villa-Lobos International Guitar Competitions. He also won the Eldorado Music Prize. In Beijing, China, the prized musician was the only Brazilian delegate at the First INDRIART Music Festival.

As a composer, Alegre boasts over 500 arrangements and was the winner of the International Composition Prize of Paris for his work "Contrastes 1." His other musical endeavors include performing with the quartet Quaternaglia.

Barros has been a teacher at the Estacio de Sa University and has run the Bachelor's program in Classical Guitar at the University of Rio de Janeiro (UNI-RIO). He is one of Brazil's foremost authorities on plucked-string instruments and has played regularly with Brazilian orchestras under an essential collection of Brazilian composers.

Each member of The Brazilian Guitar Quartet have recorded independently.

Past performances include shows at Cal-tech, Spivey Hall in Atlanta, the Florida International Festival, Dumbarton Concerts in Washington D.C., as well as appearances in Anchorage, Miami, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City and St. Louis.

Internationally, the quartet has played festivals in Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Brazil and throughout Europe.
