Winter snow storms cause casualties
Ice and snow storms bombarded East Coast and Midwest states earlier this week. Nearly 60 deaths have been linked to the winter weather.

Other problems caused by the storms include loss of power due to frozen branches falling on power lines, the closing of tourist attractions, such as the Statue of Liberty and the cancellation of hundreds of flights.

School officials canceled classes and many students enjoyed their second or third consecutive day off. New York City shut down its entire school system, the largest in the nation, with over one million students.

Residents in New York City said they have never seen this amount of snow before. Parts of Central Park received 10.5 inches of snow over the last three days and over 30 inches of snow since December.

Scientists anxious about glitches
The second Mars rover, Opportunity, has recently been experiencing power losses that are caused when one of the rover's heating units turns itself on and keeps running overnight.

The problem is causing scientists to become anxious because they have not determined what the long-term effects might be. They currently do not believe the glitch will cause the rover to overheat.

Opportunity landed on Mars last week and is located on the side of the plant opposite its twin, Spirit. The area Opportunity is exploring is believed to have deposits of iron-bearing minerals.

Scientists are interested to find out if the dry surface of Mars was once able to support life.
