Davia Tod eagerly waits her turn to make a smore at the Boys and Girls Club as she watches her brother David Tod smear marshmallow over his graham cracker.
For the fifth year in a row, Elizabeth Scheel's juvenile delinquency Sociology 366 class put on an afternoon of fun at the Southside Boys & Girls Club.
With Scheel coordinating, the SCSU students set up the event, raised funds, advertised, secured donations and recruited volunteers.
The activities were used to teach children lessons about non-violence. More than 130 children attended.
"Survivor Fantasy Island Days" ran from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, but some children were already playing the games by 12:30. Students and volunteers, however, showed up as much as three hours ahead of time to help set up.
Volunteer Adam Seifermann said he signed up because it was a good cause and beneficial to the children.
The event is the first of three to be put on by the class, was sponsored by the United Way's "Youth as Resources" service, Bernick's Pepsi, Poorboy's, Old Country Buffet and Viking Coke.
