Our campus: architectural Iron Curtain

Gina Eckes -- Guest Column
Let's talk about gross appeal of the St. Cloud State campus.
I often feel, especially in the winter and spring, like I'm wandering through communist Poland during the '50s. All the buildings are square in nature, except Riverview (built before WWII), and everything is devoid of color, except gray, brown and my personal favorite, drab.
All in all, the campus is a bleak place to live, and there's nothing exciting about it. The one fountain we do have is either shut down most of the year or full of soap. The pond by Administrative Services is easy on the eyes, but how often do students walk by it on their way to class?
They should have put it in the middle of Atwood Mall to jazz up the desolate environment that greets students coming out of any number of buildings. I may have even seen a tumble weed blow through once or twice.
And I love how the university exaggerates the fact that it's located on the Mississippi. First of all, I've never seen the river from any part of campus. Without being told, I would never know it's there. I would have to travel through muck and filth to catch a glimpse. And since when is the Mississippi even pretty to look at? It's the dirtiest river in the world with its toxins, run-off sewage and mutated fish.
But I'm complaining too much. Here at lovely SCSU, the state government has made sure we don't have to pay a pretty penny for a college education. Wow, that's so nice of them. It was also nice that they made sure we go to school in a hole, a rat's nest, a school void of any emotion and complete with dead squirrels unthawing in the dirt.
But of course we do have that nice Skalicky Plaza.
