Poet connects with Atwood

With revealing, emotionally- charged and sometimes controversial works, acclaimed spoken-word poet Ishle Yi Park shared herself Monday in the Atwood Quarry.

Tackling tough issues such as racism, women's issues, sexuality and life's dilemmas, Park depends on connecting with her audience on a very honest level.

Smith returns to Pioneer

A concert fusing the melodic sounds of Northern India and the contemporary jazz styles of George Brooks' Summit will arrive in St. Cloud 8 p.m. Sunday at Pioneer Place on Fifth.

Accomplished composer George Brooks will share his talent on both tenor and soprano saxophones.

SCSU adds dance class

A new course will join SCSU and the St. Cloud community in June. Chuck Davis and the African-American Dance Ensemble will teach "African Rituals, Rites and Rhythm."

Davis is the founder and artistic director of the African-American Dance Ensemble.

"He is the foremost teacher and choreographer of traditional African dance in America," said SCSU Dance Program Director Debra Leigh.

Ninjas, zombies and higher education

Hellboy �

There are four things that make a good movie: ninjas, zombies, robots and monsters. "Hellboy" has a monster fighting a ninja/zombie/robot. Need I say more? If you loved "X-2" this is a must see.

A lot of people laughed at my enthusiasm when I declared "Not even God could stop me from going to the theaters opening night of this movie.

Pondering the girl next door

The light at the end of the tunnel has a tendency to stay there for high school seniors in spring. Distant, nonspecific, almost illusory, the limbo between high school and "what's next" can make a little bit of mischief dangerously appealing, especially to a young sexually repressed overachiever.

St. Cloud Folk Society prospers

For more than four years, the Granite City Folk Society has been bringing performers to Bo Diddley's on Sixth Avenue and Division Street.

The schedule for this season's performances is winding down, but there is still more than a month of music on the bill before the local organization will be on hiatus.
