A concert fusing the melodic sounds of Northern India and the contemporary jazz styles of George Brooks' Summit will arrive in St. Cloud 8 p.m. Sunday at Pioneer Place on Fifth.
Accomplished composer George Brooks will share his talent on both tenor and soprano saxophones. The tour is promoting Brooks' new CD, "Summit," which features Fareed Haque on electric guitar, Kai Eckhardt on bass, Zakir Hussain on tabla and percussion and Steve Smith on the drums.
Brooks has worked with some of jazz's greatest musicians including Etta James, Anthony Braxton, Albert Collins, Turtle Island String Quartet and Henry Kaiser.
Smith is returning to the Pioneer Place for the second time this year. Smith has toured with several bands including Journey, Buddy's Buddies' and his own jazz group, Vital Information.
Smith's many achievements include receiving Modern Drummer Magazine's No. 1 All-Around Drummer Award five years in a row and being voted one of the Top 25 Drummers of All Time in a recent Modern Drummer readers' poll.
Eckhardt has also performed with famed musicians including John McLaughlin, Trilok Gurtu Bob Moses, Tiger Baku, Randy Brecker, Larry Coryell and another talented bassist Stanley Clarke. Eckhardt and Haque are also members of Garaj Mahal.
Haque brings his talents as a guitarist and his musical experience in working with a wide range of jazz and classical artists including Paquito D'Rivera, Cassandra Wilson, Kurt Elling, Lester Bowie, Arturo Sandoval and Sting.
The ensemble is on tour traveling from Boulder, Colo., on their way to the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis for shows on Monday and Tuesday. The pit-stop in St. Cloud solidifies Pioneer Place's co-founder Dan Barth's hope for bringing in bigger-name bands mid-transit from Duluth to Minneapolis.
