St. Cloud Folk Society prospers

For more than four years, the Granite City Folk Society has been bringing performers to Bo Diddley's on Sixth Avenue and Division Street.
The schedule for this season's performances is winding down, but there is still more than a month of music on the bill before the local organization will be on hiatus.
"Every week there's always a good show and that's what we like to stress," said Folk Society member Dean Severson.
The group prides itself on being able to find "surprises" in the unknown sector of the folk music world, Severson added.
Wednesday, Pieta Brown accompanied by Bo Ramsey, graced the stage at Bo Diddley's. Brown is the daughter of Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Greg Brown and is currently working on her third album.
The society's April 14 performance of Neal and Leandra (Neal Hagberg and Leandra Peak) will be relocating from Bo Diddley's to the Pioneer Place on Fifth due to their vast following.
The Minneapolis duo has performed in St. Cloud before and is no stranger to the stage. Hagberg and Peak have been on tour since the two were married in 1989.
Neal and Leandra are currently on the Red House Records label along with Greg Brown.
Laurie McClain will bring the Granite City Folk Society back to Bo Diddley's April 28.
McClain was featured with Pam Tillis and others on 2003 release "The Trumpet Vine," a tribute to Kate Wolf.
"We like to think of ourselves as people who know folk music," Severson said. "She kind of blew us away."
During her performance for the folk society last year, the audience struggled to let her leave the stage after two encores.
Canadian folk artist David Francey will finalize the society's schedule May 16.
Francey is a Scottish-born singer/songwriter and has been nominated for his second JUNO award in Best Roots and Traditional Solo Album.
