Baseball gets one win in Brookings

The Huskies woes continued this weekend on the road against South Dakota State, dropping three of four to the Jacks.
After surrendering four runs in the first inning and getting behind early in game one Friday, they weren't able to muster the offense needed, dropping the opener 7-2. Nate Larson took the loss for the Huskies, surrendering seven runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings, dropping his record to 1-4. Jacks starter Justin Allen went the distance, limiting the Huskies to two runs on seven hits, striking out four. Freshman left fielder Gary Kiess had a pair of hits for the Huskies and Joe Durham went yard for his team-leading seventh homerun.
Friday's game two was a much tighter match, with the Huskies playing with the lead early after putting up three runs in the first inning and another four in the second. Leading 7-5 going into the bottom of the fifth, a pair of homeruns sank the Huskies as the Jacks pulled ahead 9-7. SCSU would add another run in the top of the sixth when Nate Swan doubled with two out and Bobby Gregoire singled to center, driving in Noah Czech who was pinch running for Swan. But the effort to narrow the gap was in vain as the Huskies went quietly in the seventh, despite a leadoff walk by Dan Skog.
Durham and Swan both had three hits on the day, and Parnell O'Connor and sophomore center fielder Darin Shroyer both had multi-hit games for the Huskies, as they put up 14 hits as a team. Chase Nelson took the loss for the Huskies after relieving Jeremy Liebherr with two out in the third inning. Nelson went the rest of the way, giving up four runs on seven hits, dropping his record to 0-2.
Game three of the series provided the Huskies a lone victory and they earned it, belting out 13 hits. Kiess and O'Connor again provided big offense for the Huskies, each totaling three hits while Durham and Gregoire put up two. Durham's big weekend snapped a mini-slump for him as he raised his average to .316 and is catching up with O'Connor for the team lead in RBIs. Darren Haala turned in a solid pitching performance for the Huskies, allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings of work to earn his second victory of the season.
The Huskies wasted an excellent pitching performance by Mike Hoelscher in Saturday's game two as Hoelscher gave up just one hit and two walks, but it was not enough as Jacks right-hander Francisco Torres silenced the Husky offense, throwing a four-hit shutout. Hoelscher has been SCSU's best pitcher this season, aggressively going after hitters but hasn't got much run support. Allowing just 21 runs in 50 1/3 innings pitched, Hoelscher has been the team's workhorse, limiting the opposition to .282 batting average with a solid 3.75 ERA in nine starts.
The Huskies host St. John's at 3 p.m. today in a nine-inning non-conference game at Dick Putz Field and then travel to Mankato Tuesday for a two-game NCC series.
