Huskies attain home field

A dream that the Husky players had will be realized Sunday.
SCSU's three seniors have waited four years, but before they hang up their cleats for good, they will get to play a home playoff game.
"It is a goal that we have never been able to reach. It is huge," senior Heidi Westrum said.
The Huskies had their future in their hands Saturday when they traveled to Augustana College and beat the Vikings 3-2, ending their regular season with a win and a record of 2-2-2 in the North Central Conference and 7-8-2 overall.
The Huskies started strong, with first-year player Mallory Strong scoring her first goal of the season early in the game to put SCSU up 1-0. The goal was assisted by sophomore Anne Litecky.
First-year player Cassi Johnson scored her third goal of the season to stretch the lead to 2-0 when she made a pass to Litecky, who quickly passed the ball back to Johnson, who beat the goalie cleanly. Litecky picked up her second assist of the afternoon on the goal.
The Vikings did not give up and tied the game at 2-2 before the end of the first half. SCSU got a goal early in the second half to retake the lead 3-2 when Johnson scored her second goal of the game. Sophomore Sarah Regnier registered the assist.
SCSU outshot AC 16-13 and had a large advantage in corner kicks 6-1.
"It wasn't a pretty game for us, but we got the win and that is what we needed," Westrum said.
Some of the players were disappointed with the way the team played but all were happy to get a win.
"We didn't play well but we still won, it was definitely not our team out there," said junior goalkeeper Stephanie Brendel, who had six saves in the game.
Brendel has stepped up this year, taking the majority of the game play in net, she has three shutouts and currently has a save percentage of .853 and a goals allowed on average of 1.55.
Brendel looks forward to the home game because of the advantage the team had playing at Husky Stadium.
"I love the field, we are used to it, we have been practicing on it all year," Brendel said.
The excitement is already building for the players as they start to think about Sunday's game.
"It is an awesome feeling to get to play at home," Westrum said. "We are extremely excited."
The Huskies now look forward to Sunday, when they will face NCC conference rival Minnesota State University-Mankato (3-3-0 NCC, 10-6-0 overall) for the second time this year.
When SCSU won 3-2 over MSU on Oct. 10, there was not a player on the team that had beat the Mavericks.
Now, looking at a rematch, the team is excited to prove that the win earlier this month was not a stroke of luck.
"If we get Mankato, I will be pumped up to play them and prove it was not a fluke," Westrum said.
