Essay makes Corn look like a boob
Published:
Thursday, October 28, 2004
I'm writing in response to the last issue's staff essay on, of all things, breasts. I found it revolting and I'm surprised that the Chronicle (being from a liberal college as it may be) even published it. The article wasn't funny, or even tasteful.
My jaw dropped so many times reading what Jay Corn had to say I don't even know where to start. I can't help but wonder if he was even being serious. The most glaringly sarcastic sounding phrase was "through the rest of October keep the disease and its victims in mind." Okay Jay, I will think about breast cancer for the next six days, and after that, I'm going to completely forget about an important women's health issue.
I don't care if he couldn't "settle on any one thing to write about." It is completely inappropriate for a man to mention how often he has been thinking about "boobs" in an academic setting. May I advise him that next time he gets writer's block, he should pick a lighter topic to use as a space-filler?
It's obvious Corn doesn't truly care about women's health, or he wouldn't have crammed it into a half-assed article about how he was clueless for a focus, the "freaking Red Sox," seasonal politics or how he feels about relationships and feet. His essay was completely off topic and came off as a pitiful attempt from a desperate man to try to sound sensitive, available and appealing to a feminine audience.
What is this essay really about? Are you genuinely wishing to promote breast cancer awareness? I doubt it. I can't believe you said, "women are for more than just breasts." To say such a thing implies otherwise, and is demeaning, despicable and disgusting.
