Sioux logo should be protested
Published:
Thursday, April 7, 2005
What Elizabeth Petersen of "Sioux logo should not be protested" may not know is that there are various, numerous tribes of Native Americans. They have language, clothing, customs and even foods different from each other. One Native American tribe does not speak for the rest of the tribes. By stating, "the name is welcomed by the Sioux people," does not mean all the different divisions of the Sioux nation have approved this.
Eight different Sioux Tribes have written letters and/or resolutions in opposition to the UND mascot and nickname. The Hunkpapa Council of Elders letter in support of the mascot was "false and misleading" according to their Chairman. The Chairman's letter to UND President Dr. Charles Kupchella states, "our organization does not endorse the name of your school."
While defending to preserve the dignity of my heritage, it's an insult to be called the "PC police" by someone claiming to know the representation of pride and dignity. This isn't politics, its human rights.
The new UND logo itself is not racist, but rather the context in which it's used. Businesses like the NFL, MLB and NHL condone unprofessional behavior, but to have an accredited university blatantly disregard and ignore the human rights issue should be discredited.
It IS "degrading and inappropriate" in an institution of higher learning. The fans of UND are allowed to stand in our faces to say "I can, and I will disrespect you because UND provided me the atmosphere/opportunity to legally abuse you and your psyche, to make fun of you so I can have fun p
Just because other universities may not be involved as some SCSU students, doesn't mean these students should stop. Sometimes do-ing the right thing isn't always the popular thing.
