First-year infielder Jenny Gensch hits a fly ball down the third baseline during Tuesday´s game at the Husky Dome. The Huskies swept a doubleheader against Minnesota-Crookston 2-0 and 13-0.
The SCSU softball team (19-12) picked up a pair of wins, 2-0 and 13-0, against Minnesota-Crookston (2-17) on Tuesday in the Husky Dome.
The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Selke Field, but a decision was made to move the games inside because of the forecast for rain.
The change in venue did little to deter the Huskies. The first game started as a pitchers' duel with SCSU sophomore Lacey Trossbach (12-8) facing Minnesota-Crookston senior Samantha McDonald (2-8).
The game was scoreless through the first three innings, but in the bottom of the fourth, SCSU was able to break the stalemate when junior Jessica Preiner hit a ball into left field that scored senior Megan Fuches. Although the Huskies were able to load up the bases, they were unable to score any additional runs in the inning.
The Huskies added a second run in the sixth when junior Abby Augdahl scored all the way from first on a wild throw to first. The error gave SCSU a 2-0 lead.
Trossbach continued her strong pitching, stringing together three perfect innings to finish the game with a shutout.
"My change-up was working very well. We were constantly calling it because they weren't hitting it," Trossbach said.
Trossbach finished the game with eight strikeouts while allowing three hits. She struck out the side in the top of the seventh and said her desire for a shutout helped.
"I think it was determination to finish without letting them score a run, so I really got fired up, I was like, 'I can't let them score,'" she said.
The second game of the doubleheader saw the same defensive grit from the Huskies, but with a lot more offensive production.
"We knew we were a better team then them and we knew we had to pick it up (after the first game) because 2-0 is not okay and we came together as a team," first-year DH Mackenzie Johnson said.
In the first, the Huskies scored three runs including a two-run homer by senior Jessica Swartout.
"I just sat back, saw the ball and focused," Swartout said.
The Huskies shut the Golden Eagles down in the top of the second and then took firm control of the game with a seven-run inning, which included 10 batters for SCSU The inning was highlighted by a three-run homer by Johnson, her first collegiate home run.
"I saw it. It was a meatball and I went after it. It was the first pitch and took it over," Johnson said.
Johnson currently leads the team with a .412 batting average. She added five runs batted in.
SCSU scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to stretch their lead to 13-0.
The game was stopped after the Golden Eagles batted in the top of the fifth due to a mercy rule.
First-year right-hander Stef Schroeder (6-3) pitched five scoreless innings striking out six and allowing one hit.
The team was happy with their final tune-up before they start conference play this weekend.
"It lets us know that everybody in our entire line up can hit the ball hard and gets us excited for playing conference opponents," Swartout said.
The Huskies travel to the University of South Dakota for a Friday doubleheader and then head south to play the University of Nebraska-Omaha, who won the 2004 NCC regular season championship, Saturday for another doubleheader to close out the weekend.
