SARTELL -- The SCSU men's tennis team continued their strong play with an 8-1 victory over St. John's University Tuesday at the Gold's Gym Tennis Complex.
SCSU's fifth consecutive victory brought their overall record to 17-1 and added some momentum going into the weekend, in which the Huskies will have four meets in two days.
"It's going to be long and tiring with four matches, but it'll be good," Titus Christianson said. "It'll help us with (NCAA) Regionals."
Some of the SCSU players said the Huskies and St. John's share a small rivalry, but the fact that St. John's is in Division III hinders any major rivalry.
"It's kind of hard to have a rivalry when we're not in the same division," Jeff Horner said. "We look forward to playing them each year because they're 15 minutes away."
Christianson said that head coach Jerry Anderson likes to beat St. John's and said the rivalry was friendly. Christianson also said that they know a lot of the St. John's players and are friends with them.
To start the meet off, SCSU posted another sweep in doubles play.
At No. 1 doubles, Tony Larson and Joey Jachymowski won, 8-4. The No. 2 pair of Christianson and Horner snatched away an 8-2 victory and Dan Boulay and Michael Engdahl gained an 8-4 win at the No. 3 doubles spot.
"We came out and we knew we were going to have a challenge," Christianson said. "But we started out with doubles and we started out pretty strong, so we were satisfied."
When it came to the singles portion of the meet, SCSU didn't let up and won five of their six matches.
Playing at No. 1 singles, Larson defeated his opponent, 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 2 singles, Christianson won, 6-2, 6-1, and improved his overall singles record for the season to 18-0.
Engdahl won at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Jachymowski was victorious at No. 5, 6-2, 6-4. In the last match of the day, Boulay got SCSU's eighth win with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, (10-8) victory. In order to end the meet earlier, Boulay and his opponent played a tiebreaker instead of a third set.
Travis Marohl put up the day's only loss, falling in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3.
"I think, as a team, we played really well," Engdahl said. "It's good preparation for this weekend because we have some big matches and we really want to come out with some wins."
One opponent some of the players are looking forward to playing is Gustavus Adolphus College because of the challenge they Gusties provide.
"Gustavus is good and it's going to be tough playing them at the end of the weekend," Horner said.
Horner also pointed out besides playing Gustavus, SCSU also has two conference matches against Augustana College and Minnesota State University-Mankato.
"Hopefully we can get some good conference," Horner said. "We have to make sure we keep our heads on this weekend."
Friday, the men's tennis team has one meet, possibly at Gold's Gym. They will play South Dakota State University at 2 p.m.
According to Athletic Media Relations, it's still undetermined whether or not SCSU will play Augustana College at 11 a.m. to make up a March 20 meet.
On Saturday, they'll play MSU-Mankato at 9:30 a.m. before playing Gustavus at 4 p.m. Both matches are scheduled to be played on the campus of Gustavus in St. Peter.
