Bar fight leaves man on life support
A Sauk Rapids man, who was involved in a fight with a downtown St. Cloud bouncer Friday, is currently on life support, surviving with the help of a feeding tube and a respirator at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Justin Wesley Smiley, 28, was found unconscious when officers responded to a 1:04 a.m. call at The Red Carpet.
Sgt. Dave Bentrud told the St. Cloud Times that when police arrived on the scene, a bouncer from the bar was holding the man face down on the sidewalk after Smiley initiated a fight with the bouncer.
Apparently, when police handcuffed Smiley and rolled him over, they found he was not breathing, but did have a pulse.
Smiley's mother, Sue Ringwelski, told the St. Cloud Times that Smiley was breathing on his own for a short time Friday, but later needed a breathing tube. He suffers from brain damage.
Ringwelski said Smiley was out celebrating the birth of his 2-week-old daughter.
Woman sues school for son's death
A Coon Rapids woman who filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Anoka-Hennepin School District last October spoke about the case with WCCO Radio.
Janelle Secord claims the school district did not do enough to protect her teenage son from being bullied at school. She said the bullying became too much for her son, Jeremy, and he died from suicide because of distress.
Secord said bullies threatened to kill 13-year-old Jeremy. The bullies did not attend her son's middle school but went to school nearby.
A spokeswoman from WCCO Radio said the district is denying the allegations and cannot comment.
